About The Super Amazing Homepage
The Super Amazing Homepage originally started as a page just for me, to save me time at work by bringing together the search engines I used most such as Google, Corbis and Dictionary.com. I don't use the net to chat, network or socialise. I use the internet to find information, educate myself and to find as many free and useful resources as I have the time to find. From basic Open Source and Freeware Windows software, to free Linux based operating systems such as Ubuntu and OpenSUSE.
It's only right I should share such a usefull tool with the world
Originally, the layout was ugly, and the amount of code used was a disgrace! Thankfully, as my skills have evolved, the page has evolved with me. Now in it's second version, The Super Amazing Homepage has become a vital part of mine, and many of my friends and colleagues daily internet usage. Untill you start using it every day, you can't truly understand it's beauty. The main benefit, often overlooked by new users, is the fact that the homepage will remember all of the search terms you have used, across all of the engines you use, meaning searching for things over multiple sites takes far less time, as typing is minimised by the display of your browsers 'auto fill' entries.
I swear this page saves me hours every week. I honestly don't know what I'd do without it
Current Features
I have already introduced the following features to add both functionality and design:
- Dynamic Engine List
The list of engines you see on the search page is fully dynamic. Meaning there is a huge potential for future developments. I have plans to create a member login area, where users will be able to turn off engines they do not use, and replace them with others from my list of less popular, compatible engines.
The search engine list changes regularly and seamlessly - Search Provider Extensibility ( Firefox 2+ / Internet Explorer 7 )
Firefox, Internet Explorer, and possibly users of many other well know web browsers can now add any of the search engines featured on their homepage to their browser window, simply by selecting it in the drop-down list at the side of the search box. This is normally found in the top right of your main browser window.
This feature is only available through our search pages - Real Engine Icons (optional image enhancement)
Originally, for ease of use, the page was designed to group sets of engines together, and so I used an icon for each engine to represent the engines set. After developing the Search Provider Extensibility feature, I was left with the icons for each engine, and decided to incorporate them as the Real Engine Icons to provide an alternative feel to the homepage.
Instantly recognisable, each engine's "favicon" has been used - Text Background (optional image enhancement)
A background is available for the homepage featuring all the words searched for in the past month. Unfortunately it is impossible to monitor the search words used, so this can be a little offensive, depending on the nature of visitors enquiries. Soon members will be able to login, and will have the option to use only their own search terms in the background.
Now Updated!!! Runs faster than ever. Now with noticable slowdown. - Alternate Engine Layouts
Sometimes the 'Super Amazing Style' homepage can appear too long on smaller devices and wide-screen laptops. For this reason I created 2 more alternate layouts. 'Wide screen Style' is a four column version of the original design, meaning the page is short enough to fit most 1280x768 wide laptop screens. 'Low Screen Resolution Style' removes the engine icons in favour of a simple drop-down list. Useful for old machines or visually-impaired users using, for example, an 800x600 screen resolution.
